Emsella Therapy

A non-surgical treatment for bladder leakage and pelvic floor weakness, for women and men, at our Phillip clinic in Canberra.

What is Emsella Therapy?

The Emsella chair is a non-invasive treatment designed to strengthen the pelvic floor and help with a range of pelvic health concerns.

Bladder leakage and a weaker pelvic floor are common. They often develop after childbirth, around menopause, and as we get older.

At Olika, we offer Emsella as part of a wider approach to conditions including bladder control, pelvic floor weakness, recovery after pregnancy and childbirth, changes around menopause, and bladder changes after prostate surgery.

You stay fully clothed and seated for the whole session, with no downtime afterwards — which makes it a comfortable option for both women and men looking for support with pelvic health.

Benefits at a glance

Non-invasive — No surgery or needles, so you can get on with your day afterwards.

About 28 minutes — A short session that fits around your day.

Stay seated and clothed — You stay in your own clothes the whole time.

For women and men — Common after childbirth, menopause or prostate surgery, and with age.

Nurse-led, doctor-supervised — Every session run by our RN, overseen by our doctors.

Works the muscles for you — Targets the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder.

How Emsella Works

The Emsella chair uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to create strong pelvic floor muscle contractions. These contractions are stronger than you could do on your own, which helps build muscle tone and improve the control of the muscles that support the bladder and pelvic organs.

You stay fully clothed and seated the whole time. A single session delivers the equivalent of around 11,000 kegel (pelvic floor) exercises — far more than you could manage on your own.

Most treatment plans involve a series of sessions over several weeks. Your nurse and doctor will set a plan based on your symptoms and goals.

The aim is to improve the strength and control of the pelvic floor, which can help with bladder control and everyday confidence.

If you're already doing pelvic floor exercises

A lot of people come to us because they’ve been doing pelvic floor exercises (kegels) for a while but still notice leaks. Kegels help some people, but they’re hard to do, and even harder to keep up — so many people give up before they notice much difference.

Emsella takes the effort out of it: you stay seated in your own clothes while the device works the pelvic floor muscles directly. It can be used on its own, or alongside the exercises you’re already doing. Our nurse can talk through what might suit you.

How Emsella Compares

Alongside pelvic floor exercises

Kegels are hard to do and hard to keep up, so many people drift off them. Emsella carries out the contractions for you while you sit, and can be used on its own or alongside your own exercises.

A non-surgical option

Emsella involves no operation and nothing to recover from — you simply have your session and get on with your day.

More than managing leaks

Pads and liners catch leaks after they happen. Emsella works further back, on the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder.

Who Emsella is for?

After childbirth

For women rebuilding pelvic floor strength after pregnancy and childbirth.

Around menopause and with age

Hormonal change and ageing can weaken the pelvic floor. Emsella may help with strength and bladder control.

Men, including after prostate surgery

Some men notice bladder leakage after prostate surgery or as the pelvic floor weakens. Emsella may help.

Conditions Emsella Can Help With

Emsella can assist with stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder and urethra. It is suitable for women who leak with coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, or exercise, as well as those experiencing sudden urinary urgency.

Women experiencing weakened pelvic floor muscles due to childbirth, menopause, ageing, or chronic strain may benefit from Emsella’s deep muscle activation. Stronger pelvic floor muscles contribute to better bladder control, pelvic stability, and long-term functional support.

Following pregnancy and childbirth, many women struggle to effectively contract their pelvic floor muscles. Emsella can complement or enhance traditional postnatal pelvic floor rehabilitation by providing consistent, targeted activation, helping improve bladder control and early pelvic stability.

Improved pelvic floor strength can positively influence sexual wellbeing. Some women report improved sensation, responsiveness, and confidence during intimacy following an Emsella course. These benefits are secondary effects of strengthened pelvic floor function rather than the primary indication.

Women experiencing early signs of reduced pelvic support, such as mild pelvic heaviness or early descent, may benefit from improved pelvic floor strength. While Emsella does not treat moderate or severe prolapse, stronger muscles can contribute to better overall pelvic support.
Some men notice bladder leakage after prostate surgery, or as the pelvic floor weakens over time. Emsella may help improve bladder control by strengthening these muscles. Your nurse will check whether it’s suitable for you first.

Emsella for men

Emsella isn’t only for women. Men can have bladder leakage too — often after prostate surgery, or as the pelvic floor weakens with age.

The treatment is the same: you sit on the chair, fully clothed, for about 28 minutes. It may help with bladder control and leakage.

As with everyone, our registered nurse assesses you first to check it’s suitable, and your care is overseen by our doctors.

Nurse-led, Doctor-supervised

Every Emsella session at Olika is run by our experienced registered nurse (RN) and overseen by our doctors. Your doctor will set a plan based on your symptoms and goals.

How people respond can vary from person to person, and many notice a change over the course of their sessions.

Discreet & Private Setting

At Olika, all Emsella treatments are carried out in a private, comfortable, discreet setting.

Who is Not Suitable for Emsella

Emsella may not be suitable for patients with certain metal implants, pacemakers, or specific medical conditions. Your Olika doctor will assess your medical history carefully to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate.

Common questions (FAQ)

Bladder leakage is common and usually has a clear reason. The pelvic floor can weaken after childbirth, around menopause, and as we get older. In men, it can follow prostate surgery. It’s worth getting checked, as there’s often something that can help.
No. You’ll feel a strong tingling and your pelvic floor muscles contracting, but it shouldn’t be painful. You stay seated and fully clothed the whole time.
HIFEM means High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic energy. The chair uses it to make the pelvic floor contract on its own — a deeper contraction than exercises usually reach. Over a course of sessions, this gradually builds the muscle tone that supports the bladder.
It varies from person to person. Most people have a course of sessions over a few weeks. Our nurse will suggest a plan at your assessment.
Wear soft, comfortable clothes you can relax in. Avoid anything with metal, including an underwire bra — the same reason we check for metal implants. There’s no need to change or undress; you stay in your own clothes throughout.
Yes. Men can have Emsella too, including for bladder leakage after prostate surgery. Everyone starts with a nurse assessment.
Your sessions are run by our registered nurse and overseen by our doctors.
Fees depend on your plan. Please call us on (02) 5133 9053 or ask at your assessment.
Emsella may not be suitable if you have certain metal implants, a pacemaker, or some medical conditions. Our doctor will check your medical history first.
